A disturbing act of violence jolted the village of Lakhan Kalan in Kapurthala district on Monday, where the son of a local village head was injured in what appears to be a politically charged assault. As per police reports, the incident unfolded around 3 p.m., when Pavitar Singh, the son of Sarpanch Tajinder Kaur, was fired upon by unknown attackers. Sources indicated that four to five shots were discharged, with one bullet hitting Singh’s arm and another grazing his head.
Singh, who narrowly escaped with his life, later informed authorities that he had received a phone call summoning him to a residence. He arrived with a friend, who dropped him at the gate before departing. Moments after Singh stepped inside, the gunmen allegedly opened fire. The sound of gunshots sent villagers into a state of alarm, prompting many to rush out of their homes.
In a frantic effort to survive, Singh ran into nearby fields and took shelter until the threat subsided. He was subsequently rushed to the Civil Hospital in Kapurthala, where doctors confirmed that his condition is stable.
His family suspects the attack was driven by long-standing hostilities linked to the recent panchayat elections. They allege that threats had been issued earlier by individuals who were defeated in the polls.
A team from the Sadar Police Station, headed by SHO Kanwarjit Singh, arrived at the crime scene soon after and has initiated a probe. Authorities are investigating all potential motives, including political rivalry.
No suspects have been apprehended so far. Police officials stated that efforts are ongoing to identify the culprits and ensure they face legal action.
