The movement of large vehicles originating from Zirakpur and those heading towards the transport traffic signals in Sector 26 will be prohibited at Tribune Chowk during peak hours starting February 1.

According to sources, the Transport Department’s strategy to ease congestion at Tribune Chowk and surrounding roads received approval in a senior-level officers’ meeting held yesterday. As per the proposal, the restriction on heavy vehicle entry at Tribune Chowk will be enforced between 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM and again from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM—identified as peak traffic hours. The official notification will be issued following the sanction of UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore.

To ensure public awareness before the implementation of the restrictions, signboards will be installed at key entry locations. The traffic regulation blueprint was developed in coordination with the city’s traffic police.

A departmental official highlighted that Tribune Chowk is among the city’s most congested intersections, witnessing a significant volume of vehicular movement during busy hours. Heavy vehicles contribute to a majority of road mishaps, the official added. The meeting further resolved to limit the access of heavy vehicles on other city roads during these hours as well.

Wider Restrictions on Other Routes

Similar traffic constraints will apply to the corridor stretching from the Transport Light Point to the Fun Republic Light Point, and from the Khuda Lahora direction toward Junction 30 (Sector 25/38 Light Point) and onward to Junction 55 (Sectors 39/40/55/56).

Additionally, it has been resolved that no private buses or large vehicles like trucks will be permitted to operate on any internal city roads between 6:00 AM and 11:00 PM. However, the movement of heavy vehicles will be permitted on roads situated in the city’s peripheral areas.

The restriction will not extend to the entire stretch of Vikas Marg from Junction 54 to Junction 63, including the V4 road leading to the Grain Market via the Police Lines.

This development arrives amid increasing public scrutiny of the administration’s ongoing plan to build a flyover at Tribune Chowk.
