The journey of Chandandeep Singh, a 23-year-old professional boxer from Nawanshahr, exemplifies bravery, persistence, and relentless effort. He recently took part in an international professional boxing tournament in Bangladesh, where he demonstrated his talent during a six-round bout against a local contender. For the past few years, Singh has been refining his technique at Lyalpur Khalsa College in Jalandhar.
The son of an automobile mechanic, Chandandeep grew up amid economic hardships. Reflecting on his early days, he said, “I witnessed my family struggle financially. My father, who once played kabaddi, had to give up the sport due to our financial situation. I only took up boxing after enrolling in college.”
His path, however, hasn’t been free of obstacles. He shared that his mother and grandmother were initially against his decision to enter professional boxing due to its physically demanding and risky nature. “Professional boxing is more aggressive and hazardous. My mother and grandmother would get anxious when I came home injured,” he recalled.
He spoke about times when his training left him with injuries, especially around the eyes. “I used to avoid going home when I had visible bruises or swelling,” he admitted, underscoring the sacrifices he has made in pursuit of his ambition.
After his return from Bangladesh, the district administration honoured the young athlete. Deputy Commissioner Ankurjit Singh applauded his accomplishments, assuring him of full support from the sports department to help him excel further in the sport.
During their meeting, the Deputy Commissioner expressed his admiration, saying, “By representing India on an international platform, you’ve brought honour to the entire district. I wish you continued success and urge you to make the most of the assistance provided by the sports department to bring more recognition to Punjab and the nation.”
Chandandeep’s progression in professional boxing stands not only as a personal victory but also as a beacon of hope for emerging athletes, proving that with grit and dedication, even the toughest odds can be overcome.
