A local court has formally charged two individuals in connection with the shooting of a lab technician employed by the Punjab Health Department in Kharar.

The accused, Inderpal Singh and Harpreet Singh, were apprehended two months after the alleged attack and are now facing legal proceedings.

The FIR was lodged following a shooting incident on October 25, 2020, when an unidentified assailant opened fire on 48-year-old Amrik Singh while he was returning home after offering prayers at a gurdwara located in Sector 22, Chandigarh.

According to Amrik’s statement to the police, a masked youth wearing capri-style trousers fired at him upon his arrival at his residence. The attacker escaped the scene when bystanders raised an alarm. Investigators recovered both a live bullet and a spent cartridge from the location.

Two months later, law enforcement officials arrested Inderpal Singh, a resident of Sector 22, and Harpreet Singh, also known as Honey, from Ropar. The firearm allegedly used in the incident was also said to have been seized from their possession.

They were booked under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for attempted murder, along with relevant provisions of the Arms Act, at the Sector 17 police station.

Police claimed that the motive behind the attack stemmed from Inderpal Singh’s wish to marry Amrik’s daughter—a proposal the father had declined.

In its order, the court stated that after reviewing the police report and supporting documents, there was sufficient preliminary evidence to establish offences under IPC Sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy), as well as Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act. The court subsequently served the chargesheet to the accused, who pleaded not guilty and opted to face trial.

The next hearing in the case has been scheduled for October 5, with summons issued to both defendants.
