Commotion broke out at the Phagwara Civil Hospital after the demise of a young man, identified as Kapil, triggered a violent reaction from distressed family members and supporters. The youth, who had been in a critical state, passed away during treatment, leading to accusations of medical negligence by his relatives.
As per reports, Kapil was initially admitted to the government hospital in a serious condition and later referred to Amritsar Medical College for specialised care. However, on May 19, his family brought him back to the Phagwara Civil Hospital. Despite being warned about his severe condition by the medical team, his health declined further, and he died during medical care.
Following his passing, hostilities escalated in the hospital’s emergency ward. Infuriated by the development, a group of individuals allegedly damaged hospital infrastructure
and mistreated on-duty healthcare workers.Senior Medical Officer Dr Parminder Kaur informed this correspondent that she had filed a complaint with the police without delay to safeguard both personnel and patients and to take action against the troublemakers.
Authorities are currently probing the case, including the medical attention provided and the outbreak of violence. Police forces have been stationed to uphold order and security within the hospital premises.
The episode has ignited a renewed discussion about the condition of public healthcare institutions and the safety of frontline medical professionals. SMO Dr Kaur has urged for strengthened security measures to avert similar incidents in the future.
