Amid the campaign ‘Yudh Nasheyan Virudh’ (War Against Drugs), a police station building located not far from the Punjab Police headquarters has effectively fallen into the hands of drug traffickers and disruptive elements.

The recently built Mullanpur police station structure lies in a dilapidated state. For the past two years, it has been occupied by drug dealers and miscreants, while police personnel have continued to encroach upon the sports ground of ML Puri School of Eminence in Mullanpur Garibdas, situated a short distance away.

The law enforcement authorities have transformed the school’s playground into a dumping site by stacking vehicles seized in various investigations. The school’s play area is now strewn with impounded vehicles, case-related material, and miscellaneous scrap as nearby police officials routinely dispose of confiscated assets there. Abandoned cars, tippers, and earthmoving machinery cluttering the ground starkly contradict the state government’s Punjab Sikhya Kranti initiative. Moreover, the heap continues to grow each year.

Students are left with no choice but to engage in activities in unsanitary and unsafe conditions. While the nuisance was often attributed to peddlers and unruly individuals, locals noted that police actions were also contributing to the problem.

The current Mullanpur police station stands next to the school’s boundary. “The new facility is almost complete, but the Punjab Police Housing Corporation has yet to construct a boundary wall around the premises. As a result, relocation to the new building has been delayed for two years,” explained a senior police officer on condition of anonymity.

In the meantime, the structure has been vandalised—doors and windows have been broken, plumbing fixtures looted, and cracks have started appearing in the walls.
