The Vigilance Bureau (VB) on Friday apprehended sub-inspector (SI) Sukhraj Singh, deployed at the CIA unit in Jalandhar, while he was caught red-handed accepting a bribe of ₹30,000.

The arrest followed a complaint submitted by the owner of a ready-made clothing store, who resides in Saidpur Kalan village, Ajnala, in Amritsar. SI Sukhraj Singh had earlier detained the complainant’s son-in-law under Section 21 of the NDPS Act at Police Station Division No. 1, Jalandhar, after allegedly seizing 403 grams of heroin during a visit to Jalandhar on May 18 to purchase tarpaulins.

During the remand period, the sub-inspector informed the complainant that his son-in-law’s vehicle and two mobile phones were in his custody, although they were not documented as part of the case evidence, and assured that they would be returned later. When the complainant went to the police station to retrieve the items, the SI demanded a bribe of ₹50,000 for their release. Eventually, he agreed to take ₹30,000 instead, and the entire conversation was secretly recorded by the complainant.

A VB spokesperson stated that after an initial verification of the complaint, a trap was set by the Vigilance Bureau team, during which the sub-inspector was nabbed in the act of accepting ₹30,000 as bribe in the presence of two government witnesses.

An FIR has been filed against the accused under the Prevention of Corruption Act at the VB Police Station, Jalandhar Range. Further inquiry is in progress, the spokesperson added.
