In a surprising twist, a man accused of drug trafficking escaped from police custody while being transported to jail but was re-apprehended within hours by the Kapurthala police. The suspect, identified as Manpreet Singh, also known as Money, had been arrested on May 21 under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The following day, he reportedly experienced a stroke and was admitted to a hospital for medical care. As per court directives, he was to be transferred to judicial custody at Modern Jail.
On Monday, while being escorted in a private vehicle by Sub-Inspector Kulwinder Singh and senior constable Davinderpal, the police halted near Jhalla Theekriwal village to get the accused’s medical documents photocopied. While Davinderpal stepped out to handle the paperwork, SI Kulwinder Singh monitored the accused from the vehicle.
Seizing the opportunity, Manpreet Singh allegedly shoved the sub-inspector and fled the scene with the vehicle.
A case was promptly filed against him at the Kotwali Police Station based on SI Kulwinder Singh’s statement. SHO Kirpal Singh confirmed that a police team later located the accused at his home and successfully took him back into custody.
